German to English: A Translation on Translation...
Anja Cohen, translinguas a&d cohen, Switzerland.
Translation - English The translation of a text from one language to another involves much more than a grammatically, textually, technically correct and stylistically convincing transference of the linguistic and technical structures; it attempts an actual transfer of meaning that must do justice to both languages, in all their nuances and shades of meaning. At the same time it must take into account culture-specific communication and linguistic codes and the collective understanding of these, as well as their semiotic roots. An adequate transference of language and imagery, including all their associated subliminal meaning, is a work of art that demands a high level of ability, talent, sensitivity, socio-cultural competence and hard work.
Only when a translation most sensitively considers all these requirements and appreciates language as a living socio-cultural system, can it fulfil its intention and escort a text on its journey between peoples and cultures, without losing its identity/effect or its original meaning along the way.
